Hello, I was curious if there was or ever will be a plan to turn the railroad that’s no longer in use (the one that runs parallel to 42, going west out of Fuquay-Varina) into a green way trail for pedestrians and biking. It seems like a great choice to connect everyone west of Fuquay-Varina straight to down town, also it passes multiple parks and fields, it would be a great destination for runners and bikers from all around. So I was just curious if that would ever happen, if not will anything ever be made of it?

Hello! Thank you for your question. While we do not currently have plans to turn the existing railway that runs along Highway 42 into a greenway, the Town is interested in Rails to Trails projects (see the plan for some of the recommendations). Turning a railway into a greenway can be a tricky and lengthy process that involves obtaining ownership from the railway company. While it may not currently be in use, the railway may not be willing to turn over ownership at this time due to a variety of reasons (i.e. future service, storage, etc.). We will definitely keep this recommendation in mind as we move forward with our various plans and endeavors, especially as the Town continues to grow in this area.

Thank you again for reviewing the plan and providing your feedback- it's crucial for the planning process!

Are there any updates the potential greenway connecting Ballentine to downtown Varina? It was in the previous master plan, but I haven't seen any news on it. Seems like it would be a really useful route to get people to downtown without clogging the streets. Thanks!

    Hello,

A greenway is proposed to run west from Ballentine Dairy Road, Across Judd Parkway to a connection on Ransdell Road. Please see the Town's GIS map linked below to view our proposed greenways. Greenways can be found under the transportation layer.
